Once upon a time there was a humble, soft-spoken veterinarian in a small town called Avon.  This kindly doctor was far too courteous and caring to cast judgment on the obsessive behaviors of two of his friends who were gentlemen farmers with an obsession for daylilies who also lived in the town of Avon.  But alas his friends relentlessly brought him into the world of daylilies and his fervor for spiders and UFOs parallels the intense love of daylilies of his two friends to this day.  It is therefore with great excitement that MARTTI PUTKONEN is now presented to you, a grand daylily named for a great friend.
This variety measures well within the ten plus inch range and could best be described as a crispate form.  The flower color is a cranberry red self with a yellow to green throat that emanates well out into the petals and sepals.  An established clump is absolutely stunning.  The scape is sturdy and upright and allows this beauty to gently sway in the breeze giving it a sense of perpetual motion.  Given that it took over twenty years to convince Steve that he should actively breed for UFOs and spiders because as he put it “They all looked that way when I started out” I would say that he entered this arena in grand fashion. $100.00 S.F.
