PIRATES OF PENZANCE

30 to 32 inch scape - 5 ½ inch diameter - 3 to 4 way branching - 20 to 25 buds - dormant

This is the year that I have been eagerly awaiting, the introduction of some kids from Steve's fantastic Vertical Horizon a 2009 HM award winner.  As friends that have seen Steve's seedling beds can attest to Vertical Horizon is proving to be a stellar parent for the breeding of patterned daylilies.  H. Pirate Of Penzance is one example of this and is also proving to be a parent of magnificent patterns in its own right.  She is a full sister to Steve's H. Plato's Puzzle but as can be seen in the photo presents a much more distinctive, broken pattern.
Topping off the overall presentation of H. Pirate Of Penzance is the patterned eye consisting of four layers of various colors.  Deep in the throat is a band of burgundy that reappears in the eye that is circled by another band of rose red.  Within this myriad of colors is the seemingly white pattern which when looked at more closely is actually a blend of near white, grays and pale pink.  One goal here at the garden is to someday develop a daylily that resembles a stained glass window and I somehow think that this daylily will be instrumental in that achievement.  The multiple colors within the separations of the pattern were my first clue that this might be possible.  Taken to the right parents some of which have been Steve's seedlings and others being fantastic patterned daylilies from others should bring this dream to fruition.  A must have for patterned breeding although I could be ever so slightly biased.  $150.00 S.F.
